About HHS Orchestras

Currently there are three string ensembles at the High School level:

String Orchestra, the core of the string program, meets daily during 7th hour. We play a wide variety of music, ranging from Bach through Braveheart, with stops along the way for Celtic folksongs and jazz.  As a new member of the orchestra, wyou will be expected to learn how to tune your instrument, if you don't know already.  We also work on learning more advanced techniques and scales. This group plays a fall concert with the choral department.  Members of the string orchestra form part of the string choir, which plays at IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest. The string orchestra joins with winds and percussion to form the Symphony Orchestra.

Chamber Strings are a subset of our String Orchestra.  This is a traveling group which plays for local events;  their repertoire includes light classics, fiddle tunes, and popular music.  Recently we have played for the HHS Straight-A Banquet, NHS Initiation, the Kankakee Farmers' Market, and a wedding.  Members are drawn from the String Orchestra depending on their availability and the size of the venue. Rehearsals are during String Orchestra time, 7th hour, and ocaissionally before or after school.

Symphony Orchestra is the String Orchestra plus added winds and percussion.  It meets one day a week after marching season has ended.  Focus is on the standard orchestral literature, with the additon of great musical and movie music.  This ensemble plays the Christmas Concert, the Spring Concert, and also represents Herscher High School at the University of Illinois Orchestra Consortium and IHSA Organizational Contest.  We also go on tour to the district grade schools. Symphony Orchestra meets 7th hour, with usually one or two extra rehearsals for the winds and percussion (usually before school) per year.

Throughout the school year string students at Herscher High School have the opportunity to participate in IMEA All District Orchestra Auditions and IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest.  Students also have a chance to audition for Student Conductor in the Spring.  This person helps run rehearsals, and may conduct at least one piece during one of our performances.

HHS MUSIC THEORY

HHS currently offers two Music Theory courses, Music Theory and Advanced Music Theory. Music Theory is a class where we learn about the building blocks of music, and get started reading, writing, communicating about melody, rhythm, and harmony. Advanced Theory focuses more on harmony and musical construction, and is a must for serious college-bound musicians. Some topics include: piano navigation, percussion inventions, Finale Printmusic (a music writing program), sight-singing, writing music cues for a movie "scene", harmonizing melodies, four-part voicing, figured bass, jazz chord structure-- and anything else we can think of!
